A suspected kidnapping attempt in Thembisa was disrupted by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers on Wednesday evening, 7 October 2026, after officers heard a young woman screaming for help during routine patrols.

The incident happened at approximately 20:00 on Link Road, between Esselen and Liliba, near the dam.

Woman Escapes Alleged Kidnapping

According to the EMPD, officers immediately stopped when they heard the woman calling for help.

The 27-year-old woman ran towards the police vehicle and got inside for safety. She told officers that four men travelling in a white Toyota Avanza had allegedly attempted to kidnap her.

Officers then pursued the vehicle and the suspects.

The four men abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Two suspects ran towards Emfihlweni Cemetery, while the other two, including the driver, fled in the direction of Esselen Park.

Kidnapping Suspects Open Fire During Chase

During the pursuit, the suspects allegedly opened fire in the direction of the EMPD officers.

The darkness in the cemetery area made it difficult for officers to continue the pursuit, allowing the suspects to evade arrest.

No police officers were injured and no arrests had been made at the time of the EMPD statement.

A case of attempted kidnapping and attempted murder will be opened at Thembisa SAPS for further investigation.

EMPD said it will work with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to trace the suspects and the vehicle.

Public Asked to Help

The EMPD is appealing to anyone who may have information about the incident, or who may know the whereabouts of the four men travelling in a white Toyota Avanza in the Thembisa area at around 20:00, to come forward.

The incident also highlights the importance of taking extra precautions when travelling or walking at night.

Police are urging community members, particularly women, to avoid walking alone through isolated areas, open velds and poorly lit streets after dark. Residents are also encouraged to report suspicious vehicles or people to the authorities.

The EMPD condemned the alleged targeting of women by violent criminals and said officers would continue working to ensure those responsible are brought to book.

Be vigilant after dark

The suspected kidnapping attempt is a reminder to remain alert when travelling after dark. Where possible, use well-lit routes, avoid isolated areas and let someone you trust know your movements. If you notice something suspicious, report it to the police rather than confronting anyone yourself.
