Children protected by increased law enforcement efforts in South Africa

The protection of children remains a national priority as the South African Police Service (SAPS) continues its efforts to combat abuse, exploitation, and violence against young people. According to information provided by SAPS spokesperson Lt Col Amanda van Wyk, a total of 15,888 suspects were arrested and 2,773 convicted for crimes against children during the past year.

The figures were highlighted as Child Protection Month concluded, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding children throughout the year and not only during awareness campaigns.

Child Protection Month Highlights Support for Children

The SAPS National Child Protection Month campaign culminated in a dialogue session held in Ntabankulu in the Eastern Cape on 6 June 2026. More than 300 learners attended the event, which brought together law enforcement officials, community leaders, educators, faith-based organizations, and government representatives.

Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele encouraged learners to make informed choices, report abuse, and help create environments where children can grow up safely and confidently. Van Wyk noted that awareness campaigns and targeted operations formed part of a broader effort to prevent violence against children and support victims.

Convictions Send a Strong Message About Crimes

Several significant convictions were highlighted during Child Protection Month. Cases from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, the Eastern Cape, the Free State, and the Western Cape resulted in life sentences and lengthy prison terms for offenders who committed serious crimes against minors.

These convictions demonstrate the commitment of SAPS investigators, prosecutors, and community stakeholders to ensuring justice for children who have suffered abuse.

Everyone’s Responsibility

While Child Protection Month has ended, the responsibility to protect minors continues every day. Parents, caregivers, teachers, and community members all have a role to play in identifying signs of abuse and reporting concerns to the relevant authorities.

Amanda van Wyk emphasized that protecting a child requires a collective effort from society. By remaining vigilant and working together, communities can help create a safer future where all young people are empowered to reach their full potential free from fear, neglect, and exploitation.
