AFDA in 2027: Where Creative Education Meets Real-World Opportunities
Reading Time: 4 minutesAFDA prepares students for the creative economy through hands-on learning, collaboration, emerging technologies and industry experience.
AFDA is built differently, with a vision of creative education that extends beyond the classroom and prepares students for the demands of the creative economy. At a time when technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital platforms are transforming creative industries, the institution emphasizes practical learning, collaboration and the development of skills that can turn creative ideas into real-world opportunities.
Rather than focusing solely on academic knowledge, AFDA encourages students to explore their disciplines, work across creative fields, embrace emerging technologies and build portfolios that showcase their abilities. The approach reflects a broader understanding of creativity: it is not only about what people create, but also how they think, innovate and develop opportunities within an evolving industry.

AFDA Celebrates Three Decades of Creative Excellence
Having celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024, AFDA has established itself as a prominent institution for creative education in South Africa, specializing in film, television, performance, business innovation and creative writing.
In 2026, the institution expanded its national footprint with the opening of its fifth fully equipped campus in Hatfield, Tshwane. Its campuses now span Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha and Pretoria.
AFDA is home to more than 2 700 students and has a global network of over 8 500 alumni. These graduates contribute to the development of the creative industries, working across different disciplines and helping bring African stories and ideas to audiences locally and internationally.

Graduates Making Their Mark on the Global Stage
The impact of AFDA’s graduates extends across film, television, documentaries, commercials and digital content. Its alumni have contributed to more than 380 feature films and hundreds of television productions, including projects for international streaming platforms and broadcasters such as Netflix, DStv Stream, M-Net, kykNET, Mzansi Magic, SABC, e.tv, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.
Graduates work in a wide range of roles, including producing, directing, writing, performing, cinematography, editing, composing, entrepreneurship and executive leadership. Their work demonstrates the many career paths available within the creative economy, where artistic ability can intersect with business, technology and innovation.

Award-Winning Creative Talent
Recognition at major awards ceremonies and international film festivals further reflects the achievements of AFDA students, staff and alumni. Their work has received recognition at the Academy Awards (Oscars), Emmy Awards, Cannes Film Festival, South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards, Silwerskermfees Awards, South African Music Awards (SAMAs), Naledi Theatre Awards, Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards and Metro FM Awards, among other industry events.
Since 2020, AFDA students, staff and alumni have accumulated dozens of major industry awards, including 96 SAFTA Awards and 32 Simon Sabela Awards, highlighting their contribution to South Africa’s creative landscape. These achievements reinforce the role of creative education in developing talent capable of competing in an increasingly connected global industry.

The Future of Creative Education
As the creative economy evolves, education must prepare aspiring professionals for more than their first job. It must also help them develop the adaptability, collaborative thinking and practical skills needed to navigate changing industries.
AFDA’s emphasis on hands-on experience, interdisciplinary collaboration and emerging technologies reflects this shift.
For aspiring filmmakers, performers, writers and creative entrepreneurs, the opportunity to develop ideas, build a portfolio and learn how creative disciplines intersect can provide a foundation for future possibilities.
Ultimately, AFDA’s approach places creativity at the intersection of talent, technology and opportunity, preparing students to contribute to an industry where imagination and practical skills increasingly work hand in hand.
