IEC Elections: Your Vote Can Shape South Africa’s Future
Young South Africans are being urged to make their voices count as the countdown to the IEC elections continues. While the final in-person voter registration weekend ended on 2 August, online voter registration remains open until midnight on Friday, 7 August 2026, giving eligible citizens one final opportunity to register or update their voting details before the voters’ roll closes.
For many first-time voters, this is more than simply ticking a box. It is an opportunity to influence decisions that affect jobs, housing, education, service delivery and the future of their communities.

Why the IEC Elections Matter
South Africa’s democratic journey began on 27 April 1994 when citizens of every race voted together in the country’s first democratic elections. Since then, elections have remained one of the most powerful ways for South Africans to hold leaders accountable and influence the direction of the nation.
Every vote contributes to the democratic process, and local government elections have a direct impact on the services people rely on every day.
FACT: This year approximately 1.7 million citizens interacted with the registration portals the IEC Elections’ provided. Of these, 291 806 registered as first-time voters, while more than 1.5 million voters updated or confirmed their registration details.
Young People Can Be the Difference
South Africa has one of the youngest populations in the world, yet youth voter turnout has often lagged behind older generations.
The IEC Elections present an opportunity for young people to move beyond conversations on social media and make their voices heard where it matters most — at the ballot box.
Whether your priorities are better employment opportunities, safer communities, improved public transport or quality education, registering to vote is the first step towards participating in change.
A citizen commitment for democracy
The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa welcomed the encouraging turnout for this year’s registration period describing it as a clear demonstration of citizens’ commitment to strengthening democracy and shaping the future of their communities.
“I urge all eligible South Africans who have not yet registered, or who need to update their details, to do so before the proclamation date. Every registered voter strengthens our democracy and ensures that communities have a voice in local government,” said Minister Hlabisa.
The Minister reminded voters that, in local government elections, citizens may only vote in the ward where they are registered.
Who Should Register?
The Electoral Commission encourages:
- First-time voters aged 16 and older to register (voting is permitted from age 18).
- South Africans who have never registered to vote.
- Registered voters who have moved and need to update their residential address.
- Citizens who want to verify that their voter information is accurate.
Don’t Miss the 7 August Deadline
The online voter registration portal closes at midnight on Friday, 7 August 2026. Once the voters’ roll closes, no further registrations or updates will be accepted for the upcoming Local Government Elections.
Eligible voters should ensure that all personal information and residential details are correct before submitting their registration.
Your Future Starts With One Vote
Young South Africans have often spoken about wanting change. The IEC elections offer the chance to turn those hopes into action.
Registering to vote takes only a few minutes, but the decisions made by elected leaders will influence communities for years to come.
If you want better opportunities, stronger communities and accountable leadership, begin by making sure your name is on the voters’ roll before 7 August 2026.
The 2026 Local Government IEC Elections, scheduled for 4 November 2026, will provide South Africans with an important opportunity to shape the future of local governance and strengthen democratic participation at community level.
Register or update your details on the Electoral Commission’s online voter registration portal before the deadline and be ready to make your mark on election day.
