Democracy in an interconnected world strengthening ties by respectful dialogue
In a world searching for unity, the growing relationship between Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and His Excellency Dr Pedro Sánchez of Spain offers a powerful example of how nations can stand together in defence of democracy. Their recent engagements signal more than diplomacy—they represent a shared vision for a future where young people inherit a world shaped by fairness, inclusion, and collective progress.
Strengthening Global Partnerships
At the En Defensa de la Democracia initiative held in Barcelona, President Ramaphosa joined global leaders in reaffirming the importance of democracy at a time when it faces growing challenges. This gathering was not just symbolic—it was a call to action. Leaders emphasized that democracy thrives when nations work together, protect freedoms, and uplift voices that often go unheard.
For young people, this moment carries deep meaning. It shows that democracy is not a distant political concept but a living system shaped by participation, courage, and unity. When countries like South Africa and Spain stand side by side, they demonstrate that borders do not limit the pursuit of justice and equality.

Built on a Foundation
During his working visit, President Ramaphosa held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Sánchez at the Fira de Barcelona. This meeting built on the foundation laid in 2022 when Sánchez visited South Africa, marking a continued commitment to collaboration.
The relationship between South Africa and Spain is rooted in shared values—dialogue, unity, and the defence of multilateralism. These are the pillars that sustain democracy in an interconnected world. By strengthening political, economic, and people-to-people ties, both nations are creating opportunities that extend far beyond their borders.
For young minds, this partnership is a reminder that the future of democracy depends on connection. It depends on learning from one another, respecting diversity, and building bridges instead of walls.

Inspiring the Next Generation
As democracy evolves, so too must the role of young people within it. The collaboration between South Africa and Spain sends a clear message: your voice matters. Whether through education, innovation, or community engagement, the next generation has the power to shape a world where democracy is not only protected but strengthened.
Hope lies in action. Inspiration lies in unity. And through partnerships like these, democracy becomes more than an ideal—it becomes a shared global mission.
In standing together, South Africa and Spain are not just defending democracy; they are lighting the way for a generation ready to lead with purpose, compassion, and unwavering belief in a better world.
A Respect for International Law
Spain’s commitment to cooperation, respect for international law, and constructive engagement on global challenges reflect values that resonate deeply with South Africa. The relationship between Spain and South Africa is a strategic one. It seeks to significantly strengthen its political, economic, and people-to-people cooperation with the African continent.
