Shalina’s Story: When Your Body Changes Before You Understand Why

For many young people, health feels like something that belongs to the future — something to think about later in life. But for some, illness arrives early, quietly, and changes everything.

For Shalina, the journey began more than 12 years ago with symptoms that felt impossible to explain. Anxiety. Blackouts. An overwhelming feeling that something inside her body was not functioning as it should.

Initially, she was treated for hypertension. For nearly two years she followed treatment plans and attended appointments believing high blood pressure was the source of her symptoms. Yet despite medication and effort, the answers never seemed complete.

Eventually, further investigations revealed the underlying cause: Graves’ disease, a form of hyperthyroidism.

Receiving a diagnosis can bring relief, but it can also mark the beginning of a new chapter.

Living Through Change

For almost two years, Shalina followed treatment in the hope of restoring balance to her health. When progress remained limited, she underwent radioactive iodine therapy.

The treatment brought significant change.

Her body transitioned from hyperthyroidism to hypothyroidism, introducing new medications, continued monitoring, and a different way of living. Alongside this came severe anemia requiring iron treatment and support.

Physical changes followed too.

“Chronic illness may have changed my life, but it has never taken away my courage to keep living it.”

— Shalina Bhoda

Hair loss and alopecia affected not only appearance but confidence and identity. Looking in the mirror no longer felt familiar.

Yet chronic illness extends beyond what people can see.

Behind appointments, blood tests, scans and specialist visits exists something less visible — emotional fatigue, uncertainty and the challenge of adapting again and again.

When Chronic Illness Becomes More Than One Diagnosis

As time passed, Shalina’s journey became increasingly complex.

Endometriosis added chronic pain and exhaustion to daily life. Just as she learned to navigate one diagnosis, another emerged.

Then came another unexpected challenge.

Last year, Shalina began experiencing seizures.

Further investigations revealed calcifications in her brain. She learned that while there is treatment available to help manage symptoms, there is currently no cure for this finding in her particular medical journey.

The diagnosis brought grief and adjustment.

Movement and coordination became more difficult. Memory loss started affecting conversations and everyday tasks. Severe headaches became part of ordinary life.

These experiences changed routines, altered expectations, and created moments of sadness and frustration.

But they did not define her.

What Young People Can Learn From Shalina’s Journey

One of the strongest messages in Shalina’s story is not fear — it is awareness.

Young people often dismiss symptoms because they feel “too young” to experience serious health concerns. Yet paying attention to the body matters.

Some gentle reminders include:

  • Listen to persistent symptoms: If something repeatedly feels wrong, continue seeking answers and asking questions.
  • Do not normalize constant exhaustion: Ongoing fatigue, blackouts, unexplained changes, severe headaches, or persistent pain deserve medical attention.
  • Understand that health is physical and emotional: Living with illness can affect confidence, identity, emotions and relationships.
  • Build support systems: Family, friends, faith communities and healthcare teams can become important anchors.
  • Focus on management, not perfection: Not every condition can be prevented or cured, but many can be supported through treatment, monitoring and self-awareness.

Shalina’s Greatest Victory

Chronic illness has changed many parts of Shalina’s life.

But courage remained.

Her story is not only about diagnoses, appointments, medications, or difficult days. It is also about resilience. About continuing to show up. About choosing hope even during uncertainty.

Strength, she has discovered, is not found in never falling apart.

It is found in continuing.

Today, Shalina’s journey stands as a reminder that illness may shape a chapter of life, but it does not write the entire story.

And sometimes victory is found in the quiet decision to keep going.
