TUT vs UP: Bragging Rights Are Up for Grabs in Tshwane on 2 October
Reading Time: 3 minutesTUT vs UP brings Tshwane bragging rights into the spotlight as the Red Army face UP-Tuks in the 2026 Varsity Football final.
Bragging rights are up for grabs in Tshwane as the Tshwane University of Technology and the University of Pretoria go head-to-head in the 2026 Varsity Football final on Friday, 2 October. The Jacaranda City is getting ready for a football showdown of its own, with TUT’s Red Army travelling across Tshwane to face UP-Tuks at Tuks Stadium . . . the home of their rivals.
And there is no shortage of history between these two institutions.
TUT enter the final as record four-time Varsity Football champions, while UP-Tuks have lifted the trophy three times.
So, in the capital city, this is not simply another final.
It is TUT and UP. Red Army and Tuks.
One city, two institutions, one trophy, and plenty of bragging rights at stake.

TUT and UP Battle for Bragging Rights
Judging by the banter, the match has already started on social media.
TikTok user Msedi, backing the Red Army, has made his feelings clear: UP will be humbled.
TikTok user Macbeth Ntswungu, also firmly in the TUT corner, took the confidence a step further, saying TUT is fasting because UP will be their meal on Friday.
That was already a serious statement.
Then TikTok user Thato Radebe, representing the Tuks camp, served up her own response, saying TUT should not eat the whole week because TUT is the meal on Friday.
And just like that, the Varsity Football final became a food fight.
The Red Army says the Tuks are on the menu.
The Tuks say the Red Army is the menu.
At this point, somebody needs to tell the stadium caterers to prepare for both possibilities.
The Capital City Wants Bragging Rights
This is what makes an all-Tshwane final special.
The two universities are neighbours. Their supporters know each other. Their students cross paths every day.
On Friday, though, friendship can wait.
The Red Army will want their team to bring the trophy back to TUT, while Tuks will have home ground behind them as they look to add another title to their history.
The last time these two met in a Varsity Football final was in 2017, when UP-Tuks won 2-0 at TUT. Now, nine years later, the two Tshwane rivals meet again with another title on the line.
For TUT, it is another chance to add a fifth title to their record.
For UP, it is a chance to claim a fourth.
For everyone in Tshwane, it is a derby with bragging rights attached.
Bragging Rights Will Be Settled on the Pitch
The talking has been done. Almost.
UP has spoken.
TUT has answered.
The banter has been exchanged, the confidence has been shown and both camps have made their intentions clear.
Now the players have to do what footballers do best — settle the argument on the pitch.
Friday, 2 October. Tuks Stadium.
The home side has the home ground.
The Red Army has the history.
The trophy is waiting.
And after all the talk about fasting, meals and being humbled, there is only one thing left to find out:
Who gets served when the final whistle goes?
