Ronny Kanalelo has been appointed the new head coach of Marumo Gallants, marking a significant new chapter in the former Mamelodi Sundowns’ goalkeeper’s long football career. Kanalelo takes over from Phuti Mohafe as Gallants look to improve their fortunes in the Betway Premiership, with his first major test coming against Orlando Pirates on 20 September 2026.
Ronny Kanalelo is a familiar face
For Kanalelo, the appointment represents a return to South African football in a completely different role. Once a goalkeeper competing for honours on the pitch, he will now be responsible for preparing a full squad, making tactical decisions and guiding Gallants through the demands of the Premiership.
His return is particularly significant because of his previous association with Mamelodi Sundowns, where he spent several years as a goalkeeper after arriving in South Africa in 1997.

A successful playing career for Ronny Kanalelo
Kanalelo established himself as one of Namibia’s prominent goalkeepers before making the move to Sundowns.
During his time with the Pretoria club, he was part of a successful team that won three league titles between 1998 and 2000. His years at Sundowns also gave him valuable experience of competing at the highest level of South African domestic football.
That experience now forms part of the foundation on which he begins his coaching career in the Premiership.

A Namibia international
Ronny Kanalelo also enjoyed a notable international career with Namibia.
He earned 53 caps for the Brave Warriors and represented the country at the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso. Namibia were making their first appearance at the continental tournament, and Kanalelo played in all three of the team’s matches.
His international career exposed him to the pressures of representing his country at a major tournament, experience that would later become useful when he moved into coaching.
The transition into coaching
Kanalelo’s move from goalkeeper to coach was developed over a number of years.
Following his playing career, he moved into coaching and technical roles, working with clubs in both Namibia and South Africa. His experience included goalkeeper coaching as well as broader responsibilities within club football.
He also became involved with the Namibia national team in various technical capacities, adding international coaching experience to his background.
The transition allowed Ronny Kanalelo to remain involved in the game while developing a different understanding of football away from the goalkeeping position.
Building his reputation in Namibia
Much of Kanalelo’s coaching career has been built in Namibia, where he has worked with several clubs.
His coaching journey has included spells with teams such as UNAM, Black Africa, Tura Magic, Tigers, Bucks Buccaneers and African Stars.
Those experiences gave him the opportunity to work with different squads and develop his approach to team management, tactics and player development.
His latest spell at African Stars
Before joining Marumo Gallants, Ronny Kanalelo was in charge of African Stars.
His most recent spell included a CAF Champions League campaign, where African Stars advanced to the second preliminary round after defeating AS Mangasport of Gabon.
The continental campaign provided Kanalelo with recent experience of managing a team under the pressure of knockout football.
His departure from African Stars came as he prepared to take up the opportunity with Gallants in South Africa.
The challenge at Marumo Gallants
Presently, Ronny Kanalelo arrives at Gallants at a crucial point in the season.
The club made changes to its technical team after a difficult opening to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign. Gallants had struggled to collect points during the opening matches, leaving the team in need of a change in direction.
Kanalelo’s task will therefore extend beyond introducing his football philosophy. He will need to help restore confidence, improve performances and produce results.
The pressure will be immediate, with Orlando Pirates providing his first major test.
A new chapter begins
The appointment brings together several stages of Kanalelo’s football career.
He has experienced the South African game as a player, represented Namibia on the international stage, worked as a coach in different Southern African football environments and recently competed in continental competition with African Stars.
Now, as the head coach of Marumo Gallants, he has the opportunity to put that experience into one of the most demanding roles of his career.
The journey from goalkeeper to coach has taken Kanalelo across different football environments and into different roles. His latest move brings him back to the Premiership, but this time his responsibility will not be to protect the goal.
It will be to build a team capable of winning matches.
For Marumo Gallants, that process starts against Orlando Pirates on 20 September, when Ronny Kanalelo begins his latest chapter from the touchline.
