NIMCA Assembly to Focus on Media Accountability

The gathering will take place under the theme: “Strengthening independent media regulation in Africa by entrenching accountability, consolidating governance and sustainability, and advancing collective action.”

Delegates from member media councils and press ombudsman offices will assess the state of independent media oversight and editorial governance across Africa.

The NIMCA Assembly will also explore practical ways to strengthen institutions responsible for upholding media ethics and journalistic standards. Key discussions will examine the technological, economic and geopolitical forces reshaping the media industry.

Addressing Challenges Facing African Newsrooms

Among the issues expected to come under the spotlight are disinformation, threats to information integrity, limited platform accountability and the economic pressures affecting newsrooms across the continent.

The inaugural Assembly represents an important milestone in the development of NIMCA, providing member councils with an opportunity to consolidate governance structures, strengthen accountability mechanisms and build greater professional solidarity.

The network also aims to chart a path towards long-term sustainability and collective action while supporting media freedom and freedom of expression.
